Do you have your own blog? Or do you make use of social networking services? And if so, is this for work purposes, social purposes or both?
Workshop participants are invited to summarise their experiences.

Brian Kelly (UKOLN, University of Bath) uses the
UK Web Focus (externally hosted) WordPress blog for work purposes. he also has a
Facebook account which he uses for both work and social purposes. He uses various RSS readers to read a variety of work-related blogs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Williams reads loads of blogs (especially the wonderful UK Web Focus) related to work, but none for social purposes. He has accounts with a number of social networking sites, mainly for social purposes, but a few work related.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stephen Clarke would never have been a great diarist, and is therefore not a regular blogger - but does appreciate the educational importance of blogging, as a result of which he has always been keen to support blogging within the VLE at the University of Birmingham.
Stephen does use Facebook for both social and professional communication, he also finds LinkedIn to be a valuable tool for professional networking.
"I think that Web 2.0 is still in its very early stages and that things will change rapidly over the next few years. How will they change? Predictions are difficult, especially where they concern the future."

Alison Wildish contributes to a
Web Services blog for Edge Hill University. She regularly reads a variety of blogs but finds herself checking out
Techcrunch and
UK Web Focus most frequently.
She has a Facebook account which she uses for both social and work purposes; socially it always her to keep in touch with a lot of friends and professionally gives her a heads up on what her peers are doing and where they're going!

I occasionally get round to posting on our
LSE Centre for Learning Technologies team blog but spend much more time reading other learning technology blogs. We've had limited interested in blogs for teaching & learning purposes and I'm keen to find out what others are doing. Although it's not my remit I also think that many academics at our institution would benefit from blogs as homepages. We have a few but nearly all externally hosted.
I use Facebook socially and don't want my work life there! My friends' use of Facebook seems to be fading and with it mine...
Matt Lingard----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Helen Newnham has Second Life (social) and Facebook (to see what students are doing) accounts where she quietly lurks. Like Matt's experience, there was a big flurry of interest in Facebook from friends a while ago...and now it's all fading. Until convinced otherwise, she prefers wikis!

Will Allen (
Netskills)
I'm a a new-born blogger, having
taken the plunge last week! Q: How long will I keep it up? A: At least 30days...
Facebook is great, especially socially... but if you're a social person this impacts on your work life too. For example, a couple of times i've bumped into colleagues and instead of saying, somewhat awkwardly, "
ehm, hi ...y'allright?" i've recalled a status update from their profile and conversation followed on from there - A bit like Brian's vampre example - everyone wink if he uses that in his talk at this event! ;-)
I've registered for LinkedIn but to be honest don't really
'getget it'it yet!yet. I've used wikis for developing documentation, collaborative working and like this, for a specific event.

Chris Sexton (
University of Sheffield)
I have a
work blog which I started just over a month ago, a
Facebook profile which I use for work and social purposes, a LinkedIn account, and a Second Life. One day I might have time for a first life.

Ruth Page (
Birmingham City University)

I have a
work blog which I use on a weekly basis, mostly to connect with people outside BCU who have similar interests to me. I use our
VLE at BCU in all the teaching I do. I've had a lot of success using wikis to support student learning, and a good handful of my students have found
my facebook profile and keep in touch with me that way. I am supposed to use Second Life as a means of meeting up with colleagues who are all over the world to share management of a joint project, but I've had loads of hassle trying to create my avatar. Maybe that's a good thing as my real life is always way too busy.
