Summing up

A blog entry summarising the day.
Summary slides - what did we learnlearn.

On the day...

Audio only feed at http://s3.viastreaming.net/7560/
If you are in the Austin Court venue:
  • Go to the Moodle chat room for the event (registration required - see 'Moodle registration' below)
If you are attending in Second Life:If you are viewing the presentations on the Web open four browser windows as follows:

Sign-up Page For Remote Participants

If you wish to participate in the workshop as a remote participant please sign up, giving your name and institution. Note that this will not be interpretted as a formal committment (andf there is no cost to participating remotely). However there are limits to the numbers of simultaneous viewers of the video stream. Letting us know your intention to participate will help us to gauge the demand and possibly increase the number of maximum users.

Testing... testing

Please check that you can see and hear the streaming media. For people that want to take part in the day using their Web browser, please follow this link.

For people wanting to use Second Life, please go to the Virtual Congress Centre on Eduserv Island in Second Life and view the video screen.

Moodle registration

We are going to use a Moodle chat room on the day to allow virtual delegates to chat to each other and to the delegates in the room who are on wireless. You need to register to use the chat room. Please follow this link to register and enter the chat room. When you do this for the first timer you will need to click on the 'Creat new account' button, then follow the instructions. Clicking the link in the confirmation email will take you direct to the chat room.

About The Live Streaming

The talks at this event are going to be video-streamed into Second Life and onto the Web so that virtual delegates can see them.

This is very experimental. I hope it will work but it may not. The intention is to demonstrate (or not) the possibility of using very lightweight and free/cheap tools to stream a face-to-face meeting to a virtual audience in Second Life and on the Web.

Slides

A full set of slides for the day are available here as a single Slideshare show - this should make it easier to follow what is happening on the day.

Equipment and tools

This is what we are going to use to stream the event...

Process

Audio and video will be streamed up to Veodia and on from there to virtual delegates in Second Life (via an MP4 stream) and to virtual delegates on the Web via a Veodia Web page. (Note that the URL for the Web page will probably have to be announced here on the day itself)

Virtual delegates in Second Life will be able to see and hear the speaker on a screen in the Virtual Congress Centre, and will be able to view copies of slides on a second screen.

Virtual delegates on the Web will be able to see and hear the speaker on the Veodia Web page and will be able to view slides using Slideshare.

IRC and/or Twitter will be used to give all delegates (hopefully) a way of chatting to each other.

Requirements on the day

  • Two Internet connections in the venue (two laptops will be used - one for streaming, one for Second Life). Preferably not wireless.
  • Access to plug the audio mixer into the venue's PA system (if possible).
  • A table or something to work on. The camera will probably need to be located fairly close to the speakers - so I imagine myself sitting at the front of the room somehow.
  • Enough mains power (4 sockets I think).
  • A Moodle chat room.
  • My own page in the meeting Wiki (this one) for announcements, etc.

We are considering projecting a view of what is happening in Second Life for the RL delegates to see - via a separate data projector - but people may feel it is too disruptive (and the room layout may make it difficult). I'd welcome thoughts on this.

Did I mention that this is all very experimental? I am not an expert. It is not a service. I can't emphasise this enough.

If anyone reading this thinks I'm mad, I'd welcome being informed by email in advance of the workshop!

Your Responsibilities

The organisers will seek to ensure that the technologies are used effectively and will try to ensure that information for potential users is provided.

Remote participants should ensure that they trial their setup prior to the event, to ensure that any client software, plugins, etc., which may be needed are available and any configuration options, firewall setting, etc. can be handled within the local environment.
