About This Page

This page has been set up to support the discussion groups.

Participants in your discussion group will have been assigned to a discussion group and given a handout with some suggestions for topics to be addressed. These topics are given below. You should stick to the broad area of the group you have been assigned to, but you should not feel contrained by the questions which are provided.

Please include notes of the discussion group below. Remember that your notes will be used by others in the final report back session, so try to ensure that your notes will be comprehensible by others.

Discusion Group Title: Remote Participants Making Use of Third Party Services
Reporter:

You have been a remote participants at the workshop and should have listened to a number of the talks.

You are free to view the notes on this wiki from the other discussion groups. In addition we invite your comments on the following issues.

Note in order to avoid several people attempting to update this page simultaneously, please use a messaging channel to identify a reporter. Then update the status field at the top of the page.

The streaming video service was provided by a company called Veodia and the virtual reality environment was in Second Life service. The slides you viewed were probably hosted on the Slideshare service. You have therefore been making use of a variety of third party services.

Topics for discussion:

  • Have you encountered any problems using these services?
  • What would be the benefits if the streaming video, access to slides and virtal reality environment were provided in a managed environment (e.g. hoisted by a JISC Service)? What would be the disadvantages?
  • Would you be willing to make use of these remotely-hosted services to participate in a future event? If so, what suggestions would you make to improve the experience?

  • Second Life provides a social network, as do Facebook and MySpace. To what extend should institutional policies or advice regarding social networking services also cover Second Life? And is there an argument that, just as a JISC-funded study into student attitudes to Facebook was given a headline in the Guardian of "Get Out Of MySpace!", institutions should stay out of Second Life?
